Ingredients
12 baked and cooled cupcakes
1 batch buttercream frosting
8 oz fondant (assorted colors) or decorative cardstock
Cornstarch or powdered sugar (for dusting)
Food coloring (optional)
Edible glitter or sprinkles (optional)
Small cookie cutters or fondant molds
Toothpicks or lollipop sticks (if using cardstock toppers)
Instructions
1. Frost cooled cupcakes evenly with buttercream and smooth the tops.
2. If using fondant, lightly dust your surface with cornstarch or powdered sugar.
3. Roll fondant to about 1/8-inch thickness.
4. Use cookie cutters or molds to cut desired shapes.
5. Add details with food coloring, edible glitter, or small fondant accents if desired.
6. Allow fondant pieces to firm up slightly before placing on cupcakes.
7. Gently press toppers onto frosted cupcakes to secure.
8. If using cardstock, cut out shapes and attach them to toothpicks or sticks with glue.
9. Insert cardstock toppers carefully into the center of each cupcake.
10. Serve immediately or store in a cool, dry place until ready to display.
Notes
Prepare fondant decorations a day in advance to allow them to dry and hold their shape.
Match colors and shapes to your party theme for a cohesive look.
Avoid refrigerating fondant-topped cupcakes, as moisture can cause colors to bleed.
